How can you “remain” in the vine? How can you develop spiritual “roots” that will last? How do you grow as a Christian? Here’s some practical thoughts about the essential things that must take place for you to be growing spiritually: |
“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine and you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” - John 15:4-5 |
What do I need to do to grow as a Christian? |
Spend time with other Christians in worship. It is impossible to continue to grow spiritually, without constantly being challenged spiritually and without sharing your Christian journey with other believers. Find a church or congregation where you can worship regularly… (by the way, we happen to think that Waterloo is a great place!)But remember, there is no perfect church—and don’t be disappointed if you find “less-than-perfect” people. That’s what the church is for—to provide spiritual nourishment, so that we can grow! |
Develop a daily pattern of devotional time. It is equally impossible to continue to grow spiritually, without constantly being shaped and re-shaped by spending time in God’s Word. The Apostle Paul warned the early church that they needed to have their minds renewed daily, to avoid being conformed to the patterns of behavior and thought of the world. This daily pattern can vary to accommodate your available time and spiritual need. But whatever you do—find a routine and stick to it daily. You will reap rich rewards from a disciplined approach to your spiritual life. |
Develop a hunger for reading Scripture. The Bible is the one thing that can uniquely communicate the message of God in every time and circumstance. Those who learn to read daily from Scripture, and reflect on its meaning—will gradually become more and more formed into the image of the God who is revealed in this sacred book. Reading and reflection upon scripture and essential disciplines if you desire to grow spiritually. |
Develop a passion for Spiritual Reading. You will also benefit from spiritual writers from the early church like Augustine or even John Wesley. You may wish to read from some more contemporary authors such as: Henri Nouwen, Frederick Buechner, Brennan Manning or Eugene Peterson. Don’t hesitate to experiment until you find the most fruitful way to use your daily devotional time for your own spiritual nurture. |
Develop a disciplined life of Prayer & Meditation. You will also find that Prayer is a gift and a treasure that is essential in our quest to grow spiritually. Your prayer life is the key to staying in a dynamic relationship with God. Your times of prayer must become more than just stating our needs before God—though this is important! We not only cry out for God’s help—we must also learn to offer ourselves to Him. This means that all that we are, have, and hope to become. Your prayer life will also benefit from listening and meditating quietly during your time of “prayer.” You may also find it helpful to record your thoughts, impressions or even prayers. If you want to know where God is leading you—you’ve got to spend time listening for His voice! |
